Cyclone Nisarga Approaching Mumbai At 120 KMPH

Mumbai the financial capital of India is bracing for a cyclone in over 100 years. It was a tropical cyclone named Nisarga but it intensified into a “super cyclonic storm” today morning.

  1. Cyclone Nisarga will make landfall about 100 km from Mumbai near Alibaug. Its wind speed could be up to 110 km/hour gusting up to 120 km/hour.
  2. In Maharashtra, more than 19,000 people have been moved to safe places. CM Udbhav Thackeray has appealed people to stay indoors.
  3. The eye of the storm is visible in the Dopplers Weather Radars (DWR) that are tracking the storm in Mumbai and Goa. The diameter of the eye is 65 km.
  4. Mumbai police has banned human movement along the coastline since last night.
  5. Directorate General of Civil Aviation cautioned airlines against operating in cyclonic conditions.
  6. A storm surge of up to 6.5 meters high will inundate the low-lying areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts.
  7. Over 30 National Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed at sensitive areas to conduct rescue operations.
  8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation and payed for the well being of all.
  9. Indian Coast Guard Ships and planes have been warning fishermen to return to harbour before cyclone sets in.
  10. It is second cyclone to strike India’s coastline in less than two weeks. Earlier Cyclone Amphan made landfall in West Bengal and Orissa. It killed 100 people and displaced millions.

Indian-American Scientist Bags Prestigious Science Award

Renowned Indian-American inventor Rajiv Joshi has bagged the prestigious Inventor of the Year award for his great work in the field of electronic industry and artificial intelligence.

Early life and qualification of Dr Joshi

The master inventor has more than 250 patented inventions in the US and he works at the IBM Thomson Watson Research Center in New York. He is an alumnus of IIT Mumbai and holds an MS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Also, he has done PhD in mechanical/electrical engineering from Columbia University, New York.

He remembered that his parents always inspired him with the stories of the renowned inventors like Guglielmo Marconi, Madame Curie, Right Brothers, James Watt, Alexander Bell, Thomas Edison and others. He said that the stories of the great stalwarts shaped his mind and encouraged him to do inventions.

The prestigious annual award was presented by the New York Intellectual Property Law Association early this month but it was a virtual award ceremony. WHO Makes Harsh Vardhan Chairman Of Its Executive Board

The 34 members of the Executive Board are designated by the elected member states of the World Health Assembly. They were elected for a three-year term. The board meets twice a year – first in January and the second time in May. The meetings are scheduled just after the Health Assembly.

RBI Made 5 Important Announcements Today

In a surprise move, the RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das reduced the repo rate from 4.4% to 4%. Also, the moratorium on banks was extended by another three months due to the extended lockdown. It was his address to media after the government announced 20.97 lakh crore stimulus to the economy.

Highlights of RBI’s announcements

• Monetary Policy Committee of RBI decided the repo rate to 4% from the existing 4.4%. It is the lowest repo rate since 2000. The central bank also sliced the reversed repo rate to 3.35% from the existing 3.75%.

RBI extended the loan moratorium for another three months period starting from June 1 to August 1. This move is expected to bring relief to the working class whose income is badly hit by the pandemic.

• Governor Shaktikanta Das projected the gross domestic product (GDP) to shrink in the current financial year. The disruption of economic activities is the reason behind low GDP. But the governor expressed confidence that the economy would be revived by the second half of the financial year ending March 31, 2021.

• The Export-Import Bank of India is allocated Rs. 15,000 crore to support trade activities. The EXIM Bank provides financial assistance to exporters and importers.

• SIDBI is given another 90-days for the 90-day term loan facilities. It is done in order to provide liquidity to the MSME sector that has been badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
