World Pharmacists Day Celebrates Safe And Effective Medicines For All

Every year, on 25th September, pharmacists across the globe celebrate World Pharmacists Day. This year they are celebrating the theme “safe and effective medicines for all”. The theme was selected by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in March.

The objective of theme is to emphasize the role of a pharmacist in safeguarding safety and well-being of patients through improving use of medicines and reducing medication errors.

In the US, pharmacists would educate the world how they can further ensure safety of patients. 

The 2018 theme was “Pharmacists: Your Medicines Experts”. It was decided to educate the world on how patients and healthcare professionals can use pharmacists as a trustworthy source for knowledge and education on medication.

Who said what on World Pharmacists Day?

FIP President Dominique Jordan said that pharmacists used their broad knowledge and expertise to ensure that patients got the best medication.

Jim Kirby, PharmD, BCPS, CDE, FAPhA, Sr. Director of Pharmacy Services for Kroger Health sees this day as an opportunity to engage patients, asses their medication and make sure that patients use take their medicines safely and effectively.

Rena Gosser, PharmD, BCPS, RPh, a population health pharmacist at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, WA put more focus on medication optimization in addition to precautions taken by pharmacists to ensure safety of patients. Tyler Vest, PharmD said that medication safety and efficiency is the foundation to support the theme. He supported right of patients to have individual pharmacists taking care of them.
