NSA Doval Visits Riyadh After Imran Khan’s Meeting With Mohammed bin Salman

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is on an official visit to Riyadh to discuss bilateral regional issues with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after Pakistani Prime Minister stopped in Riyadh to seek prince’s support for Pakistan’s Kashmir cause.

Importance of NSA Doval’s Riyadh visit

Imran Khan recently visited Riyadh to enlist support of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his Kashmir policy. He’s already received positive response from China, Malaysia and Turkey. Also, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has issued a strong statement on Kashmir. In this situation, it becomes mandatory for India to play diplomacy to downplay Pakistan’s efforts.

NSA Doval is the highest emissary of PM Narendra Modi. Also, he’s instrumental in executing the government’s order or de-operationalize Article 370 of constitution in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. During his Riyadh visit, he will emphasize on the prince that Kashmir is an internal matter of India and that removal of Article 370 would bring Kashmir into the mainstream. He will educate the crown prince on how the present scenario is beneficial for Kashmir.

India’s relations with Saudi Arabia

New Delhi has a very cordial relationship with Riyadh and this relationship goes beyond the energy-diaspora. It includes the areas that were rare in earlier times. Issues like security, counter-terrorism and defense have transformed relations between India and two powerful Gulf countries – UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Till today, these two premier Gulf powers have maintained restrained on speaking over Kashmir issue. Their role is considered neutral in international circles.

Both the leaders were discussing world situation when Imran Khan diverted the focus to India. Trump diluted the discussion by including Afghanistan.

A laugh broke out with Trump’s friendly neighbor remark. But it was a little bit sarcastic towards Pakistan. The political analysts see it as a sarcastic intervention to highlight the real situation of south-east Asia and especially with India and Pakistan.   • Trump allowed Modi to bash Pakistan but asking for a standing ovation from the crowd for rallying against “radical Islamic terrorism” that goes beyond Pakistan.
  • Modi took the turn and called for a decisive war on terrorism and received another standing ovation from the audiences. He’s quick to seize the moment by linking 9/11 with 26/11. He asked that world knows where the perpetrators of the terrorist acts were hiding.
  • Neither of the two world leaders named Pakistan in their speeches but it was pretty clear to who they were referring too. While Modi gave clear hints that he’s talking about Imran Khan, Trump echoed his thoughts by saying that US knows India’s concerns with its borders.

Pakistan’s failed attempt to portray India in a bad light

Imran Khan sent one of his federal ministers to garner support of the protestors of Howdy, Modi event. He even approached dissatisfied Sikhs and other minorities in its attempt to spoil the event but all his efforts went in vain.

Scores of protestors holding placards arrived at the gate of the Houston stadium where Modi and Trump were addressing an Indian-American diaspora. But the crowd rejected the protestors.

Israel election results indicate formation of a Unity Government but there are mixed views on the formation and durability of a coalition between rival parties. But the country is seeing a good start with President Netanyahu inviting Kachol Levan leader Benny Gantz for talks.

  • KaholLavan won 32 out of 120 Knesset seats
  • Likud captured 31 but Netanyahu’s bloc comprising of right-wing and ultra-Orthodox parties presently stands at 55 seats
  • The centre-left bloc has 56 seats

What is the likely outcome of these results?

Since no party has a majority to form a government, there are more chances of a unity government. Also, Netanyahu has already started the dialogue to come to terms with others and work together. He has invited Gantz for talks to chalk out a plan for forming a government.  

What economists have to say about government formation?

It is good news for economy because a unity government would be less susceptible to coalition demands from small parties and narrow sectoral interests of mean politicians. Economists favour a unity government because it would be able to take structural reforms and hold on policies of recent years. They further said that a strong government would have little difficulty in announcing fiscal adjustments needed for 2020 budget.

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange rose on Wednesday after the results are out. The benchmark TA-35 and TA-125 indices both posted gains of about 0.5% while the banking index surged 2.3% higher. Also, prices for medium and long term government bonds recorded an increase of 0.9%.

Xi Jinping Won’t Discuss Kashmir With Modi

Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India in October but they won’t talk Kashmir. The dates of meeting are yet to be finalized but both the countries agree that it would be an informal meeting without aides.

Conclusion from the last meeting

The two leaders met in Wuhan last year but the meeting remained informal. They discussed strategic matters that are of bigger importance instead of concentrating their talks on one or two specific issues especially Kashmir.

Chinese stand on Kashmir

China raised the issue of Kashmir in United Nations but Kashmir has never been an issue between India and China. The leaders met last year but didn’t discuss Kashmir. They will again meet in October and discuss strategic issues only.

Belt and Road Initiative

Xi Jinping is likely to push his Belt and Road Initiative during his talks with India. Chinese government wants India to be a partner country in its road initiatives. Also, the Chinese government would discuss measures that can help in safeguarding peace and stability in the border areas. The Chinese government promised that there would be no hidden agenda and the meeting would be a start of trust building.

Boris Johnson’s Heckled Luxembourg Visit For Brexit

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson had to face a perplexing situation during his recent visit to Luxembourg. He was there to negotiate a Brexit deal that he claimed was in his mind but EU said otherwise. They said Britain offered no deal to EU.

Lunch with EU President

The British Premier joined European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker for lunch at the Bouquet Garni restaurant. But he was heckled by hundreds of Britons from the beginning of his trip.

A group of retirees living in Luxembourg welcomed Johnson in Luxembourg with slogans and banners reading Fascist, Stop the coup, Tell the truth and Shame on Boris. But the situation at the restaurant was more difficult to handle.

A group of approximately 50 protestors was present at the restaurant gate to shame the British PM for his unwelcome exit from EU. The scene created at the restaurant forced Boris to leave without addressing the gathering.

Media briefing cancelled

Boris Johnson was to meet journalists at the restaurant but he cut short his visit citing the unruly mob as the reason behind his exit from the restaurant. But Luxembourg later addressed the protestors and raised questions regarding Britain’s un-ceremonial exit from EU. The crowd cheered to his voice.

Brexit and Boris Johnson Britain is set to exit EU on October 31 with or without deal. But Boris is hopeful of negotiating a deal with EU. On the other hand the EU president is of the opinion that Britain must come with an deal acceptable to the EU.

PM Modi To Address 50,000 Indian-Americans Jointly With US President Trump

According to English news headlines, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are going to create history on September 22 by jointly addressing more than 50,000 Indian-Americans in a joint rally at NRG Stadium in Houston.

What is this event?

PM Modi is going to address the Indian-American community in a mega Houston event “Howdy, Modi! Shared Dreams” organized by a non-profit Texas India Forum. It is a newly formed body of Indian-American organizations in the US.

What is the significance of the event?

It is the third major address by PM Modi and first after his reelection as Prime Minister. He first addressed Indian-Americans in 2014 at the Madison Square Garden in New York and the second time in 2016 in the Silicone Valley. Both the events were attended by 20,000 audience. But the third one on September 22 is going to be big with 50,000 audience have already registered for the event.

Modi Trump joint rally

Both the leaders displayed bonhomie by announcing the joint rally. Also, it would be the third meeting between the two leaders. The earlier two meetings were on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Japan in June and G7 Summit in France in July. India isn’t a member of G7 Summit but PM Modi was invited as a special guest by French President Emanuel Macron.

In the latest trending news, the I&B and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar presented the 100-day report card of Modi 2.0 government and answered some of the burning questions related to Kashmir, economic slowdown and steep penalties for traffic violations.

Article 370 and 35A

The minister made it clear thatabrogation of special status of Jammu and Kashmir was necessary to bring the erstwhile princely state into the mainstream development politics. He made a strong point by saying that not a single bullet had been fired in Kashmir for 35 days of repealing the special status. Also, Section 144 is in effect in only 14 police stations.

I&B and Environment Minister on Pakistan

The minster said that Kashmir was the center of foreign policy of Pakistan and that is why Pakistan is making hue and cry over the change of Kashmir’s status. But the world leaders are with India.

Economic slowdown

The minister said that the economy was on strong ground despite global slowdown. He further stressed that the government was taking whatever measures were necessary. The country was on the way to become a $5 trillion economy and supported the measures like merger of public sector banks and additional credit expansion would help the economy in the long run. He promised that the infra projects worth over Rs. 100 lac crores in the next rive years would strengthen the economy.

Motor Vehicles Act

According the minister, steep hike in traffic challans was necessary to keep a tab over rash driving and irresponsible behavior by motorists. The objective of heavy fine is to discourage motorists from taking the traffic rules lightly.
