UK’s Labor Party Passed Kashmir Resolution Contrary To The Official Stand Of the UK Government

India took strong note of UK’s opposition Labor Party calling for international intervention on Kashmir issue. But Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar made it clear that there was no question of engaging with the Labor Party or its representatives on Kashmir.

What did UK’s Labor Party say on Kashmir?

The Labor Party passed an emergency motion on Kashmir in its meeting on Wednesday. The resolution demanded the right of self-determination for Kashmir and called for party leader Jeremy Corbyn to make way for international observer to “enter” the region to press for the right of the people.

What did the Labor Party resolution say?

The Labor Partytabled the resolution at its annual party conference in Brighton is very critical of the official stand of the UK government. It states that the party should attend the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to raise the Kashmir issue on the international forum. And it calls Jeremy Corbyn to ensure that someone from the party attends UNHRC session.

The resolution further reads that the party leader Jeremy Corbyn should meet high commissioners of India and Pakistan to pitch for “mediation” to restore normalcy in the state and to prevent escalation of nuclear conflict between the nuclear states.

What did India say on Labor Party’s resolution on Kashmir?

Indian government ruled out any possibility of mediation by anyone because Kashmir is a bilateral issue and India is firm on its stand. UK government also acknowledges Kashmir to be a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.

Imran Khan sent one of his federal ministers to garner support of the protestors of Howdy, Modi event. He even approached dissatisfied Sikhs and other minorities in its attempt to spoil the event but all his efforts went in vain.

Scores of protestors holding placards arrived at the gate of the Houston stadium where Modi and Trump were addressing an Indian-American diaspora. But the crowd rejected the protestors.

Mark Zuckerberg Grilled On A Private Dinner With President Trump And US Lawmakers

Facebook chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg went to Oval office to meet US President Donald Trump and other lawmakers to discuss the future Internet regulations. Trump shared a picture of him shaking hands with Zuckerberg but provided no details of the meeting.

What issues Facebook is facing?

Recently a Senate panel asked executives of Facebook, Google and Twitter to appear before it and answer the questions related to digital responsibility in the wake of online violence and extremism.

The US Federal Trade Commission has already fined Facebook $5 billion in a wide-ranging settlement to strengthen privacy controls and oversight at the social network.

Mark Zuckerberg’s stand

It was a private dinner after the Senate appearance and grilling of Facebook chief for data protection and privacy missteps leading to heavy fine on Zuckerberg. Israel election results indicate formation of a Unity Government but there are mixed views on the formation and durability of a coalition between rival parties. But the country is seeing a good start with President Netanyahu inviting Kachol Levan leader Benny Gantz for talks.

  • Likud captured 31 but Netanyahu’s bloc comprising of right-wing and ultra-Orthodox parties presently stands at 55 seats

Since no party has a majority to form a government, there are more chances of a unity government. Also, Netanyahu has already started the dialogue to come to terms with others and work together. He has invited Gantz for talks to chalk out a plan for forming a government.

It is good news for economy because a unity government would be less susceptible to coalition demands from small parties and narrow sectoral interests of mean politicians. Economists favour a unity government because it would be able to take structural reforms and hold on policies of recent years. They further said that a strong government would have little difficulty in announcing fiscal adjustments needed for 2020 budget.

Boris Johnson’s Heckled Luxembourg Visit For Brexit

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson had to face a perplexing situation during his recent visit to Luxembourg. He was there to negotiate a Brexit deal that he claimed was in his mind but EU said otherwise. They said Britain offered no deal to EU.

Lunch with EU President

The British Premier joined European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker for lunch at the Bouquet Garni restaurant. But he was heckled by hundreds of Britons from the beginning of his trip.

A group of retirees living in Luxembourg welcomed Johnson in Luxembourg with slogans and banners reading Fascist, Stop the coup, Tell the truth and Shame on Boris. But the situation at the restaurant was more difficult to handle.

A group of approximately 50 protestors was present at the restaurant gate to shame the British PM for his unwelcome exit from EU. The scene created at the restaurant forced Boris to leave without addressing the gathering.

Media briefing cancelled

Boris Johnson was to meet journalists at the restaurant but he cut short his visit citing the unruly mob as the reason behind his exit from the restaurant. But Luxembourg later addressed the protestors and raised questions regarding Britain’s un-ceremonial exit from EU. The crowd cheered to his voice.

Brexit and Boris Johnson Britain is set to exit EU on October 31 with or without deal. But Boris is hopeful of negotiating a deal with EU. On the other hand the EU president is of the opinion that Britain must come with an deal acceptable to the EU.

PM Modi To Address 50,000 Indian-Americans Jointly With US President Trump

According to English news headlines, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are going to create history on September 22 by jointly addressing more than 50,000 Indian-Americans in a joint rally at NRG Stadium in Houston.

What is this event?

PM Modi is going to address the Indian-American community in a mega Houston event “Howdy, Modi! Shared Dreams” organized by a non-profit Texas India Forum. It is a newly formed body of Indian-American organizations in the US.

What is the significance of the event?

It is the third major address by PM Modi and first after his reelection as Prime Minister. He first addressed Indian-Americans in 2014 at the Madison Square Garden in New York and the second time in 2016 in the Silicone Valley. Both the events were attended by 20,000 audience. But the third one on September 22 is going to be big with 50,000 audience have already registered for the event.

Both the leaders displayed bonhomie by announcing the joint rally. Also, it would be the third meeting between the two leaders. The earlier two meetings were on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Japan in June and G7 Summit in France in July. India isn’t a member of G7 Summit but PM Modi was invited as a special guest by French President Emanuel Macron.

A Cargo Ship With 4000 Hyundai Kia Cars Capsizes In The Coast Of Georgia

The latest in English news headlines is about a cargo ship with over 4000 cars on boardcapsized close to Georgia cost in America. Also, the ship caught fire after turning down but all the 20 crew members in the vessel were saved by a rescue party.

Who is the owner of the ship?

It is Golden Ray and this cargo ship belongs to a South Korean company Hyundai Glovis. The ship was used to transport cars. It left Brunswick Port of America with 4000 Hyundai Kia cars but soon start tilting to a side. According to port officials, they didn’t find any problem during loading of the vehicles. The captain of the ship sent emergency signals when the 80% of the vessel was tilted.

About Golden Ray

The cargo ship is 656 ft long and it weighs approximately 71,000 ton. The vessel was launched in 2017 and it can transport 6,933 cars at a time. The American National Transport Safety Board is inspecting the incident but it has yet to arrive at a conclusion. The rescue team saved all the crew members and took them to closest medical facility for a detailed examination. They will be released after complete physical checkup.

Google Doodle Shows Hans Christian Gram Discovering Gram Stain On His 166th Birth Anniversary

Google celebrates the 166th Birth Anniversary of Hans Christian Gram, Danish bacteriologist, noted for developing Gram stain. The stain technique developed by Gram is used to differentiate bacterial species even after more than a century.

Hans Christian Gram

Born on September 13, 1853, discovered stain technique while working with German microbiologist Karl Friedlander in Berlin in 1884. He noted that staining bacteria makes it easy to classify bacterial species. He classified bacteria in Gram-positive and Gram-negative.

Gram’s career

A noted scholar, Gram earned his MD from the University of Copenhagen in 1878 and. He started teaching pharmacology and in 1891 and was appointed professor at the University of Copenhagen. But he resigned from the chair in pharmacology in 1900 to become a professor of medicine.

Google’s Doodle on Gram

Created by Danish guest artist Mikkel Sommer, the Doodle spells each letter of Google to represent Gram carrying out his experiment.

The letter “G” is Gram staining bacteria; letters “OO” are made round glasses on the face of Gram; letter “G” becomes a microscope classifying the bacteria and letters “LE” represent bacteria classified by Gram.

The Doodle looks like Gram carrying out experiment on bacteria. It shows the Gram stain technique developed by the scientist.
