What Is Wrong With Cadbury India Private Limited?

Cadbury India Private Limited (CIL) has been accused of fraudulently availing area-based tax benefits in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. Also, a First Information Report has been filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation after a preliminary inquiry.

What are the allegations against CIL?

The company is accused of availing tax benefits to the tune of Rs. 241 crore for setting new units in Himachal Pradesh. According to CBI, the irregularities took place between 2009 and 2011. The agency said that the investigation revealed that the company bribed the government officials to get tax benefits it wasn’t entitled to and tried to cover the matter by misrepresenting facts.

What are the facts of the case?

In 2007, CIL proposed to make an independent unit in the Baddi district of Himachal Pradesh to be eligible for exemption from excise duty and income tax for additional 10 years. But the company expanded its existing unit built-in 2005 instead of making an independent unit. And it obtained a license for the second unit that was an expansion in July 2010 that is four-months after the cut-off date to get benefits.

What did CBI say in its FIR?

The CBI found that the company bribed tax Central Excise Officials Nirmal Singh and Jaspreet Kaur through middlemen. It also said that the company managers also conspired to cover the facts by misrepresenting facts.

Wrestler Ritika Phogat committed suicide after losing the final match of a state-level wrestling tournament on Wednesday. 17-year-old Ritika Phogat was part of the famous Phogat family who shot to fame after Amir Khan’s movie Dangal.

A resident of Jaitpur village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu, Ritika Phogat was the cousin sister of famous Phogat sisters – Geeta and Babita. They are daughters of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler and Dronacharya Awardee.

Wrestler Geeta won first-ever gold medal for India in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Also, she was the first woman wrestler to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Wrestler Babita has won one gold medal (2014 Commonwealth Games), one silver (2010 Commonwealth Games), and one bronze (2012 World Wrestling Championships).

Ritika Phogat had been taking training under Mahavir Singh Phogat at the Mahavir Phogat Sports Academy in Haryana for over five years. She was playing in the state-level sub-junior, junior women, and men wrestling tournament in Bharatpur.

She lost her final match on March 14 by 1 point but couldn’t bear the disappointment and allegedly committed suicide. The senior Phogat was said to be present at the tournament.

Russia Fears Fresh Sanctions From US

Russia could face fresh sanctions by the US, based on an American intelligence report released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence leveled serious allegations on Russia for interfering in the 2020 presidential elections.

What was the intelligence report?

It is a bulky 15-page document that details how Russia tried to influence the presidential elections of 2020 in favor of the former president Donald Trump. Also, the report alleged that Russian President Vladimir Putin directed those efforts. Serious claims were made against the then-candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter by Russian-linked Ukrainian figures.

The report even said that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential elections to help Trump.

The report also alleged that Russia offered bounties to Taliban-linked militia to defeat coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Trump’s allies alleged that China was acting on behalf of Joe Biden but the fresh intelligence report punctured those claims saying that China was looking for stability with the US and that it couldn’t risk blowback if caught.

The Delhi National Capital Territory Of Governance (Amendment) Bill 2021 gives more powers to the Lieutenant Governor (LG). First, the Delhi government would have to adhere to a timeline to refer proposals relating to legislature and administration to the LG.

Highlights of the Delhi NCT Bill

• LG’s opinion has been made mandatory for Delhi government to implement it decisions including those taken by the cabinet

• LG is free to make an opinion and take independent decisions in the matters his opinion is sought

• In laws framed by the assembly, the government would mean LG

• The assembly and its committees are deprived of the power to review the administrative decisions by the LG. Also, any rules formed in violation will be cancelled

The proposed amendments will bring the Delhi government at par with other Union Territories but Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that real objective of the amendments is to cripple his government.

The Congress said that the bill would deprive a democratically elected government of its powers. It also announced a dharna at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. It termed the proposed bill a “Black Bill”. No Spectators For Remaining Indian V/S England T20Is

Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) decided to hold the remaining T20Is between India and England behind closed doors in the wake of rising cases of COVID-19 in Ahmedabad. The decision was taken after a detailed consultation with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA).

When would the remaining matches be played?

It was a series of five T20Is between Indian and England. Out of these five matches, two have been played on Friday and Sunday and each team won a match. While the first two matches were played with audiences up to 50% of the capacity of stadiums, the remaining three matches on March 16, 18 and 20.

What is the reason for playing behind the doors?

BCCI held a detailed discussion with GCI and local health authorities before making a statement regarding hosting remaining matches behind the closed doors. The statement issued by BCCI reads that the cricket control board is committed to follow the regulations suggested to curb the spread of the pandemic. It also said that the cricket board keeps health of players, workers and spectators on the top.

Since the remaining three T20Is will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium that has a capacity of seating 1.32 lack spectators, it is decided to hold the matches behind the closed doors as allowing even 50% of the spectators will be significant.

What will spectators do with tickets?

Cricket fans that have already booked seats in the stadium can get refund and those with complimentary tickets are requested not to visit the stadium as no spectator will be allowed.
