Elon Musk finally sealed the Twitter deal at $44bn to get control of the social network with more than 200 million users and growing. Tesla chief who has a frequent critic of Twitter in the past said that the platform had not lived up to its potential as a platform for “free speech”.

On 4 April, Elon Musk emerged as the single largest shareholder of the social media group. On 14 April, he offered to buy all Twitter shares for $54.20 each in a takeover bid. But the Twitter board opposed the attempt by making it expensive for Elon Musk. But the initial transaction faded after shareholders warmed to Musk’s offer of putting $21bn of his own money and taking rest of the amount as loan from financial institutions including Morgan Stanley. Twitter confirmed the sale and said that it would be closed in 2022.

Launched in 2006, Twitter boasts of 217 million daily active users and a market cap of nearly $40bn. But its co-founder Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO in November 2021. He made the chief technology officer Parag Agrawal as an acting executive. Elon Musk started tweeting about his interest in buying the company as early as 2017. With 83m followers, he is a prominent user of the app.

The US Again Warns India of CAATSA Sanction Over S-400 Missile Deal

The US again raised its concern over India buying S-400 missile defense system to India and called Russia is playing a destabilizing role in the region. But it admitted that India’s decision to buy Russian missiles is based on the national interest of the country.

State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said that the US had concerns with the S-400 system and he thought that the deal put the destabilizing role of Russia not only in the region but potentially beyond as well in the spotlight.

Price further maintained that while the US hadn’t decided about the missile deal, it was something the US continued to discuss with the government of India about the risk of CAATSA sanctions for the missile deal with Russia.

Price was speaking to the reporters about the implications of the Russian missile on the Indo-US bilateral ties. The US is analyzing the deal in the shadow of its heightened tensions with Moscow for Russia’s imminent Ukraine invasion.

India closed the S-400 missile deal despite strong objections from the Biden administration and the threat of US sanctions. Also, the US administration has yet to decide on CAATSA sanctions.

Price said that the US continued to urge all countries to avoid buying Russian weapon systems. He further maintained that the US didn’t have a timeline to offer, but the Biden administration continued to discuss those issues with New Delhi.

John McAfee, the owner of the leading McAfee antivirus software firm, died as a fugitive in a Spanish prison. A Spanish court deemed it a suicide after the court turned his application for resisting extradition to the US was turned down.

Why was the US seeking the extradition of John McAfee?

He was accused of not filing tax returns for several years despite making a good profit by promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting work, and selling the rights to his story for a documentary. If proved, he could face conviction and McAfee feared he could be imprisoned for life. He was 75 at the time of his death.

Why was his application contesting extradition was turned down?

McAfee alleged that he was facing persecution for raising his voice against the rampant corruption in the federal departments. He also opposed the flat money system that allows banks greater control over regulating the money supply. But the court found no material in the allegations and released the order to extradite McAfee.
