1,230 Migrant Workers Brought Home In A Special Train From Telangana To Jharkhand

The first special train carrying stranded migrants from Telangana to Jharkhand left the southern state at around 4:30 am. It carried a total of 1,230 people following all the social distancing norms for safety of the passengers.

The special train

It started from Lingampally in Telangana to Hatia in Jharkhand. It is a 24-coach train that can carry more passengers in normal days but the number of passengers in a coach were reduced from 72 to 54 to maintain social distancing. Also, the Telangana government kept it a low-key affair to prevent the repetition of Bandra like situation, where hundreds of migrant workers gathered at the Bandra station on getting a tip-off about train service.

Centre allowed movement of migrant workers

The move to run the special train for Jharkhand migrants came after two days of central government allowed students and migrant workers with no symptoms of COVID-19 to go back to their native places. Jharkhand CM said that every citizen of Jharkhand was valuable for him.

It started with Uttar Pradesh CM bringing migrant labourers stuck in Haryana back home. But the move irked Bihar CM that called it violation of lockdown. Jharkhand also opposed the move but later requested the centre to allow him to run a special train to bring his people back to their homes.

BJP supported the move

Sources in the BJP said that the party put pressure on the government to allow movement of migrant labourers. The party fear that holding migrants could damage its popularity.
