Man City Reaches Champions League Semifinals

Manchester City entered the semi-final of the Champions League by beating Borussia Dortmund with 2-1. Man City will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.

How Man City emerged victorious?

It is the first-time in six years that Man City has reached the semi-final stage in the Champions League reached the semifinals but it wasn’t an easy win for Man City. They were trailing by one goal till the second half when Riyad Mahrez scored an equal on the 55th minute. But Man City did fairly well in the second half when they kept possession of the ball and built pressure on Dortmund.

Jude Bellingham was quick to score the first goal for Dortmund in the 15th minute into the game. With this goal, the teenager became the youngest UCL scorer at the age 17 years. He broke the record of U.S. international Christian Pulisic.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan praised Dortmund….

Ilkay Gundogan called Dortmund a deserving club and team. He said that they were grateful for being in a great competition, reaching the semifinals for the first time with that team. The midfielder also said that Dortmund had a lot of quality and they can beat everyone on a good day.

Joy for Man City manager….

Man City manager Guardiola reached his eighth Championship League semifinals as a coach. Also, it is his first with an English club. He equaled the record of Jose Mourinho.

Brighton almost spoiled Liverpool’s chances of retaining their title by beating the champions with 1-0 at Anfield on Wednesday. It was the second home defeat for the champions since 2012. Also, it was the third consecutive home game where Liverpool failed to score since 1984. Last month, Burnley ended their 68-game unbeaten home run in the Premiere League.

Jurgen Klopp’s boys looked handicapped before Brighton because of the absence of the senior centre-backs and the goalkeeper. Klopp said that Liverpool could do well because they were fatigued both mentally and physically. The key players were absent and Jordan Henderson was again assigned into the central defense.

The crushing defeat has relegated Liverpool at fourth place. It is now seven points behind Manchester City that look set to win their third Premiere League title in four years. Klopp’s men have a huge mountain to climb as they will fight with Manchester City on Sunday. And this match is going to be crucial for Liverpool as the City still have a game in hand.

Steven Alzate scored the only goal of the match to get Brighton a lead over Liverpool. But Liverpool had the advantage of possession of the ball in the start. Even Mohamed Salah tried to score a goal in the opening minutes but that golden opportunity was missed. Also, Klopp’s men had no idea on how to make a move. Manchester City won’t play Champions League for the next two years. The reigning Premier League champion has been barred from the said championship by UEFA. An independent financial control body of UEFA announced the decision regarding ban on Manchester City on Friday.

Reasons for ban on Manchester City

One of the richest soccer clubs, Manchester City was found a culprit of “serious breaches” of European soccer’s financial regulations. It was found the club had been guilty of multiple violations related to club licensing and the financial fair play rules.

It is to be noted that UEFA tried to put a tab over the gap between rich and poor clubs by putting fair play rules. Also, it wants to control the growing debt crisis of soccer clubs.

Penalty for Manchester City

UEFA has penalty for clubs that don’t follow its fair play regulations. And it has found Manchester City 30 million euros ($32.5 million) for failing to meet the regulations and not cooperating with the investigators. And this punishment could have far reaching consequences for the balance sheet of Manchester City.

The worth of Champions League is worth about $100 million for a club but missing the championship could have devastating effects on career decisions of top players and potential signings with big brands.

Ban would take affect from next year

Manchester City is kept free from the ban for this year. It will play with Real Madrid on February 26 in the first-part of the home-and-home series in the round 16 of the championship.
