Ram Jethmalani represented prominent persons from L.K. Advani to Haji Mastan and from assassins of Indira Gandhi to Rajiv Gandhi. But he rose into prominence from the famous Nanavati murder case of 1962. The case involved a naval officer who was charged of murder of lover of his wife. Jethmalani represented the victim. After Nanavati case, Ram Jethmalani became a celebrity in Bombay.

Ram Jethmalani was elected to 6th and 7th Lok Sabha on BHP ticket. He also became a member of Rajya Sabha in 1988. He also served as minister for law and urban development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his grief over the demise of a note criminal lawyer and politician. He said that India had lost an exceptional lawyer and an iconic public figure. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also paid his tribute to Ram Jethmalani.
