18,000 Amazon Employees Will Be Separated With Benefits

Amazon hurriedly announced a job cut due to an internal leak about the decision to reduce the workforce by over 18,000 employees. And these reductions are in addition to the 10,000 layoffs the company announced in November.

Why Is Amazon Reducing Its Workforce?

CEO Andy Jassy cited the uncertain economy as a reason for the layoff. He also said that the company’s leadership was “deeply aware that these role eliminations were difficult for people, and they didn’t take those decisions lightly.

As of September, the retail giant employs 1.54 million people worldwide excluding seasonal workers recruited during periods of increased activity, particularly during the holiday season. Its global staff was almost doubled due to vengeance hiring during the pandemic time when the demand for online deliveries was at its peak. Most of the recruitments were made at the beginning of 2020 and 2022.

Andy Jassy said that the company will start informing the impacted workers from January 18 but they had to make a sudden announcement because one of their teammates leaked this information externally. Some of the staff will be from Europe.

Amazon’s spokesperson Kelly Nantel told TechCrunch that as part of their annual operating planning review process, they always looked at each of their businesses and what they believed they should change. As they had gone through that, given the current macroeconomic environment, some teams were making adjustments, which in some cases meant certain roles were no longer necessary. They didn’t take those decisions lightly, and they were working to support any employees who might be affected.

One of the consequences of those decisions was that some roles would no longer be required. E-retailers Want To Take Part In Joint Fight Against COVID-19

E-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart again put the case for sale of non-essential goods and asked for permission to sell the items that have become essentials over a prolonged period. Also, the ecommerce companies promised to make deliveries while following the lockdown conditions of social distancing.

Amazon delivery

It said that ecommerce offered the safest way for sellers/retailers to serve the needs of citizens while ensuring social distancing. Amazon was committed to keep citizens safe and that e-commerce can play a crucial role in the joint fight against the pandemic said the company. It further maintained it can help in fight against coronavirus by starting supply of goods.

Flipkart delivery

The ecommerce company said that it can help in easing the burden of piled up inventory of MSMEs with quick delivery of products to consumers in a safe and secure manner. Also, it promised maintaining social distancing norms while making online deliveries to consumers.

Government on ecommerce deliveries

The government has allowed sale of essential goods that include pharmaceuticals and medical equipment through ecommerce platforms but it has put a ban on sale of non-essential goods by e-retailers. The delivery agents handling delivery of non-essential goods are advised to follow the instructions provide by the governments of states and UTs they are working from.

Lockdown in India

The country is currently in the middle of the extended lockdown enforced to break the chain of spread of novel coronavirus. The lockdown was extended on April 14 and it will remain operative till May 3.

Amazon Leaks Highly Anticipated OnePlus 8 Pro And OnePlus 8 Phones

An Amazon India affiliate page published pictures of two highly anticipated phones of OnePlus. But the brand has yet to make any confirmation about release of the published phones.

Upcoming phones of OnePlus

The brand is expected to release two new models OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro in the first half of 2020 but the phones are featured alongside existing models of OnePlus on Amazon. The retail giant published the new phones from OnePlus with an advertising fee.

Specs of the rumored OnePlus phones

Both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are expected to carry similar design and features. The display would have hole-punch design. Also, it would be 120Hz QHD+ Fluid Display that the company accounted last month. Wireless changing is also expected as the brand has joined the Wireless Power Consortium.

The OnePlus 8 series phones are expected to pack Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC and up to 12GB of RAM. They would also pack Android 10 out-of-the-box. Earlier there were reports that the OnePlus 8 Pro would sport a quad-rear camera with Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor. It is also rumored that these phones would have a curved display panel.

Launch of new OnePlus phones

The brand has yet to announce the launch date of the phones. But the OnePlus 8 was spotted with model number IN2011 on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) database last month. But Amazon removed the listing soon after it was spotted and sent viral.
