To Start Free Ride To Women Service In Its Report

DMRC Seeks Rs. 1566.64 crore And Eight-Month Time To Start Free Ride To Women Service In Its Report

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation prepared two-point formula for implementing the ambitious free ride for women scheme of the Delhi government.

In a detailed report sent to the Delhi government, DMRC sought annual funding to the tune of Rs. 1566.64 crore to provide fare exemption to women. DMRC is working on two options to fund the scheme.

First Option: Women commuters would get pink tokens but DMRC needs at least eight-month time to make necessary arrangements.

Second Option: DMRC would provide tokens and cards to women commuters and it requires one-year to start the free service.

The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal opted for the pink tokens and asked DMRC to speed up the process to complete it in less than eight-month time.

He said that DMRC only needed to arrange for pink tokens and re-open its ticket counters to start free ride for women commuters. And it shouldn’t take much time, maintained the Chief Minister.

The DMRC would also require permission of fare fixation committee to start the service. But the approval is only a formality and there is no apprehension of the fare-fixation committee blocking the scheme.

Formed by the central government, the fixation committee looks into the fare-related decision of the DMRC. Headed by a serving or retired high-court judge, the committee includes chief secretary of the Delhi government and representatives of the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry. The DMRC had four fare-fixation committees since its inception in 1995.
