Nirbhaya’s Killers Executed After Seven Years

All four convicts of Nirbhaya gang rape – AkshayThakur (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Mukesh Singh (32) – were hanged at 5:30 an in Tihar Jail, Delhi. Their execution took place soon after their final petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Convicts had petitioned before Delhi High Court

It was a hurriedly filed petition and their lawyer cited coronavirus as a reason for not filing petition with proper documents. They had petitioned multiple times to stall their execution over the past few months. And they managed to do so three times at the eleventh hour. The lawyer of Ajay Thakur even pleaded to send them to India-Pakistan border or to Doklam at the China border instead of hanging.

Their last days in prison

The convicts were kept in isolation in separate cells in the last hours. According to an official they hardly slept. Also, they refused a last meal or the last wish. The official further said that they were barely eating in their cells. One of them even begged for his life while he was led to the gallows. The Asia’s largest prison was on lockdown since last night for the execution.

She said that they all had to wait so long for that day. That day was a new dawn for the daughters of India. The beasts had been hanged. She went home and hugged picture of her daughter after hearing the Supreme Court’s verdict.

Nirbhaya Case: Hanging Deferred For The Third Time

Hanging of the four convicts of Nirbhaya case was deferred for the third time today. A judge in Delhi High Court stopped their execution citing legal reasons.

Akshay Thakur (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Mukesh Singh (32) are trying their best to escape the gallows in one pretext or another. The court said that the convicts must get all opportunities to get legal remedies.

The convicts had been filing petition after petition to buy time. Pawan Gupta filled a mercy petition before the President Ram Nath Kovind after the Supreme Court rejected his curative petition today morning. He waited till the last moment to file mercy petition and rushed to the court in the last hour to defer execution.

Seema Kushwaha, the prosecution lawyer said that couldn’t the court understand the manipulation of law. She further said that it took years to get justice. Central government also approached the apex court last month to request a change in laws that help criminals.

Deferred hanging

The execution of Nirbhaya convicts had been deferred twice before on January 22 and February 1. On February 5, the High Court allowed the four convicts a week to explore all legal remedies including mercy petition and one of the convicts filed his mercy petition at the last moment. The court has already said that the four can’t be hanged separately.

Nirbhaya rape

The gruesome rape and murder took place on December 16, 2010 when the medical student was raped and murdered in a moving bus and here mutilated body thrown on the road.
