What Is World No Tobacco Day?

Every year, May 30 is celebrated as World No Tobacco Day with the object of educating people about health risks of consuming tobacco and convince them to abstain from consuming tobacco. Let’s learn more about World Tobacco Day and its theme in 2020.

Beginning of the World No Tobacco Day

World Health Organization (WHO) started World No Tobacco Day by a resolution WHO42.19 passed on May 31, 1988. The world health body confirmed that it recognized tobacco consumption a serious health issue. It decided to dedicated a day for education on health risks from tobacco and made May 31, World No Tobacco Day.

Theme of World No Tobacco Day 2020

This time, the focus is on youth and it is evident from the theme that is to prevent youth from consuming tobacco and protecting from the mischief of the tobacco industry. It is learnt that today’s young generation has developed a liking for tobacco products including cigarettes, hookah and pan masala. But little do they know that these products are very harmful for health.

Tobacco deaths in India

Every year, millions of people die due to tobacco related illness including lung and mouth cancer. But no concrete steps are taken to reduce the number of tobacco related deaths. Also, the tobacco consuming population is affecting those that don’t consume tobacco.

Tobacco consumption leads to serious health hazards including cancer of different types including breast cancer in women, diabetes, heart ailments and erectile dysfunction. The World No Tobacco Day is celebrated to aware people about these diseases.
