Director Anurag Kashyap has tried his best to make his Netflix original film Choked – Paisa Bolta Hai as close to reality as possible. Inspired by the demonetisation drive of 2016, the story revolves around the lives middle-class families living in four-storey building in Mumbai.

Story

Sushant (Roshan Mathew) is a struggling musician who lives in a Mumbai apartment with his banker wife Sarit (Saiyami Kher) and son Sameer (Parthveer Shukla).

Sushant is jobless and is in debt. His wife Sarit who works in a cooperative bank has to bear the financial burden of meeting needs of the family of three. Their story reflects of the life of a typical middle-class family struggling to survive in tough situations like posed by demonetisation. Sushant has some debts to pay but the responsibility of his debts lies on his wife as he is jobless. Also, they are unable to pay attention to the upbringing of their son due to their financial worries.

Wajid Khan Of Sajid-Wajid Passed Away At 42

Singer composer Wajid Khan of famous Sajid-Wajid duo passed away in Mumbai. The 42-year old singer was hospitalized with a kidney problem a few days ago in Surana Hospital in Chembur suburb and he breathed his last on Sunday. But there are conflicting claims about his death.

Death due to natural reasons

According to music director Salim Merchant, Wajid Khan had multiple health issues. He had kidney transplant a year ago and recently got infection in the kidney. Merchant said that Khan was on ventilator on the last days as his condition deteriorated during treatment.

Death due to coronavirus infection

The entertainment website Bollywood Hungama claimed that Wajid Khan died due to COVID-19. A noted journalist from the website tweeted that singer Sonu Nigam confirmed the demise of Wajid Khan and that Khan was suffering from novel coronavirus infection.

Netflix is offering its premium plans for free for one month. The new members will be provided an opportunity to move into premium plans for 30 days in which they will get all the services of premium members. At the end of the free plan period, they can choose to switch back to their previous plans or continue with the upgraded plans.

The biggest subscription-based streaming service of the world has come up with a marketing tactic to promote its premium plans. It is offering a upgrade to its subscribers so that they can experience video streaming in a new way. Also, the free service will help them choose the best plans for their needs.

The upgrade is available for two plans – Basic and Standard. While the “Basic” subscription plan starts at Rs. 499, the subscription rate of “Standard” plan is Rs. 649.

Basic subscribers will be upgraded to Standard where they will enjoy high-definition (HD) video resolution and simultaneous viewing on two screens that is currently unavailable in the Basic plan.

Standard subscribers will be moved to “Premium” subscription that provides ultra-high-definition (UHD) videos up to 4K resolution and the option of watching four screens at a time.

The upgrade will be done without charging any additional amount from the subscribers and it will remain effective for 30 days after which the subscribers will be asked to pay for the upgraded plan or switch to their previous subscription plan.

Ghoomketu Is Certain To Crash Land Despite Being A Multi Starrer Film

Ghoomketu is a comedy drama but in reality, it is a serious story of rural India’s obsession with Bollywood. The movie has many strong points but the director fails to leave any mark on the viewers. Nawazuddin Siddiqui did a great job. Also, Amitabh Bachchan a short role in the movie.

Story

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is 30-year old aspiring actor who always dreams big. He wants to go to Mumbai and write scripts for Bollywood movies and he is confident that he will fulfill his dream with hard work and blessings of lady luck. But he loses the sympathy of audiences when he rejects his wife in a mass-wedding and body shames her in public.

He runs to Mumbai with the help of his aunt but spends his time writing slogans for auto rickshaws and political rallies. Finally, he lands a job in a small newspaper. But he doesn’t get a break. Producers keep him shifting from one style to another but never approve his stories.

In his hometown Lucknow, his family starts a manhunt for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. His uncle lands in Mumbai to trace his nephew. The police inspector is provided one-month time to find the writer and dispatch him to Lucknow. Nawazuddin Siddiqui also has money only for a month.

Stars of the movie

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the biggest start followed by his irascible father played by Raghubir Yadav and then the comic editor of the newspaper Gudgudee, Brijendra Kala. The movie will be screened on Zee5 due to lockdown effect.

HBO Max Announced Release Of Zack Snyder’s Justice League Re-Cut

HBO is going to release its streaming service from next week and it will host a re-versioned edition of the superhero film Justice League according to an announcement made by the company.

Based on the DC comic book, the film was released in 2017. But its director Zack Snyder didn’t contribute to the post-production and editing work because of a family tragedy. His daughter did suicide.

Joss Whedon, the director of The Avengers completed the movie in the absence of Snyder but fans commented that the movie was too-light hearted. Whedon did many things but fans complained that the job wasn’t up to the Snyder’s original intent.

Soon the fans started a campaign #ReleasetheSnyderCut on social media and persuaded the producers to make a new version of the movie. It is set to be release in 2021 but it isn’t known whether it will be a six-part series or a long directors-cut film.

Streaming competition

Like others, HBO Max is also starting video streaming service and looking for Hollywood A-listers to attract subscribers. But it was likely to get Justice League because HBO Max is the subsidiary of Warner Media that made the movie.

Similarly, Apple TV Plus made an announcement regarding its streaming service. It announced that it will release Tom Hank’s film Greyhound. The movie is developed by Sony Pictures. The movie was set for a theatrical release but the producers changed their mind due to COVID-19 induced lockdown.

Amazon Prime members have good news. They can enjoy the premier of the much-awaited movie of the mega-star Amitabh Bachchan, GulaboSitaboon the streaming platform. The movie also stars Ayushmann Khurrana.

The streaming platform has seven movies including big budget pictures listed for release. Due to coronavirus lockdown, the Producers Guild decided to release the movies on an OTT platform and they roped Amazon Prime for the big release.

In addition to GulaboSitabo, the OTT platform will release Shakuntala based on the real life of math genius Shakuntala Devi. Vidya Balan is playing the role of Shakuntala Devi in the movie. The five other films are – Keerthy Suresh’s Penguin, PonmagalaVadhal, starring Jyothika and produced by her husband Suriya, Aditi Rao Hydari’sSufiyumSujathayum, and the Kannada films French Biryani and Law.

Multiplexes opposing the OTT release of movies

INOX expressed its displeasure and disappointment of movies being released on streaming video sites. It said that the deviation from the normal was alarming and disconcerting for multiplex businesses. PVR Cinemas also joined INOX in criticizing the move to release movies on OTT platforms. It is evident that skipping the theatrical window release of movies will cost the multiplex businesses dearly.

The Producers Guild defended its action

The guild called for unity to save the movie industry in the difficult times of coronavirus. They said that everyone from director to producer and from distributors to exhibitors were facing lot of difficulties. Cinemas are closed for uncertain times and those relying on movies are suffering due to non-release of pictures.
