Nagal put up a valiant fight against his “idol” and champion while playing his maiden Grand Slam main draw match at the US Open. The 22-year old player from India displayed no signs of being overwhelmed by the sense of playing before a huge crowd and nor was he moved by the opinion of expert commentators. Determined to perform, he gave a stunning performance including a couple of delightful forehand winners before the audience.

Roger Federer looked nervous before SumitNagal

The champion made 19 unforced errors and made a poor start before Nagal that made only 9 unforced errors. Also, the champion was seen struggling with his first serves. He got only 48% of his first serves. These mistakes put immense pressure on the Swiss player. But he bounced back to match and snatched it from Nagal in the second round.

World ranking of SumitNagal

Nagal touched the carrier-high ranking of 175 after the match. His earlier world ranking was 190. It was his first attempt in Grand Slam after losing all the 3 big matches in 2019 but the Indian tennis player managed to reach the main draw of an ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg for the first-time earlier this year.
