European Leaders Negotiating Brexit After Exit Polls
European leaders on Friday would charge EU negotiator Michel Barnier with negotiating a close trade deal with Britain once the PM Boris Johnson wins the election for an orderly Brexit. Exit poll results on Brexit predicted a workable parliamentary majority for Boris Johnson.
Brexit result awaited by European leaders
New president of the European Council Charles Michel was hopeful of a strong message about Brexit. He said that the council was ready for the next step and that they would see that the British Parliament accepted the Withdrawal Agreement and took a decision.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen agreed but added that Brussels would congratulate the winner and look forward for post-Brexit trade talks.
France’s minister for European affairs, Amelie de Montchalin said the Brexit result would comfort President Emmanuel Macron who wanted London to leave the bloc on January 31 as planned.
The EU leaders had a Brexit text draft ready to adopt on Friday at the end of two-day summit at Brussels. According to latest draft, 27 EU leaders would reconfirm their support for Brexit and orderly exit of Britain according to the Withdrawal Agreement signed by British PM Boris Johnson.
Also, the EU leaders would call for a future relationship based on a balance of rights and obligations with UK. The new relationship would ensure a level playing field in terms of business and trade rules. The leaders would ask the European Commission to prepare a draft for future relationship with the UK after its withdrawal.
