India Celebrates 88th Birthday Of Bhagat Singh

September 28th is the birthday of legendary Indian socialist revolutionary Bhagat Singh. His two great deeds of revolution against the British in India and execution by the British at the age of 23 made him a hero of the Indian independence movement.

Birth of Bhagat Singh

28th September 2019 is the 88th birthday of Bhagat Singh born in 1907 at Chak No. 105 GB, Banga Village, Jaranwala Tehsil in the Lyallpur district of the Punjab Province of British India. His parents were Kishan Singh and Vidyavati.

Bhagat Singh inherited patriotism from family – his grandfather Arjun Singh was a follower of Swami Dayananda Saraswati and was associated with Hindu reformist movement, Arya Samaj. Bhagat Singh was also influenced by Arya Samaj. His father and uncles were associated with the Ghadar Party led by Kartar Singh Sarbha and Har Dayal.

Schooling of Bhagat Singh

He didn’t attend the Khalsa High School in Lahore because his father disapproved the school’s allegiance to British government. Bhagat Singh went to Dayanand Anglo-Vedic High School of Arya Samaj. He visited Jallianwala Bagh hours after the massacre. He was 12 then. After two years, Bhagat Singh welcomed revolutionaries with other villagers.

Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi

Earlier Singh was a follower of Gandhi but latter’s calling of non-co-operation movement after the violent incident of Chauri Chaura in 1922. Disillusioned by the philosophy of non-violence of Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh joined the Young Revolutionary Movement and started advocating violent overthrow of British government.

Revolutionary activities of Bhagat Singh

  • Killing of Saunders against death of Lala Lajpat Rai in 1928
  • Escaping through the D.A.V. College entrance after killing Saunders
  • Throwing two bombs into the Assembly chamber in 1929
  • Hunger strike in jail against ill-treatment to political prisoners
  • Execution on 23rd March 1931

Every year 28th September is celebrated as birthday of Bhagat Singh. The entire country commemorates the life of legendary Bhagat Singh through his deeds.
