• The first good news is coming from Italy that claims to have developed a vaccine for COVID-19. Presently the vaccine is in the most advance stage of trial in the Spallanzani Hospital in Rome. This vaccine neutralizes SARS-CoV-2 virus in human cells.

• A day before, Israeli Defense Minister also announced a breakthrough in developing COVID-19 vaccine by Israel’s Institute for Biological Research (BIR). He said that BIR had developed a monoclonal neutralizing antibody to combat novel coronavirus.

• Jenner Institute in Oxford University is working on a potential vaccine – ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. Clinical trial on human volunteers has started on April 23. The vaccine contains a strain of common cold virus and the scientists have taken the genetic material of novel coronavirus to make the vaccine work.

• India is experimenting with plasma therapy that provides passive immunity to COVID-19 patients. Plasma from the blood of a patient recovered from coronavirus infection is taken for treatment. The seriously ill patients are provided the therapy and it is showing good signs. But India is yet to announce any breakthrough in plasma therapy because it carries the risk of life-threatening transfusion related complications.

India Launches Biggest COVID-19 Rescue Mission

India is launching is massive rescue mission through air and sea route for the people stranded abroad due to coronavirus pandemic. There are more than 3 lakh people stuck in different places in Europe and US. But this time, the rescued people will be charged for the service. Rescue from Europe will cost Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 1 lakh from the US. Naval warships will rescue people from West Asia and Maldives.

Highlights of the story

• Indian citizens excluding OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) will be rescued in this operation. National carrier will fly 14,800 Indians in 13 countries back home in 64 flights.

• The evacuation will start on May 7 with 10 flights bringing back 2,300 Indians.

• In the coming days, the government will send 10 flights to UAE; 7 each to US and UK; 5 each to Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Kuwait and Philippines; 2 each to Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. Also, there will be flights for Malaysia and Bangladesh.

• The flights will carry between 200 to 300 passengers to maintain social distancing. Also, the passengers will be asked to declare their medical condition like fever, cough, diabetes and any respiratory disease.

• People with valid visas could also take advantage of the rescue flights depending on the permission granted by their destination countries.

• All passengers will be screened before boarding and only asymptomatic people will be rescued. At home, they will be quarantined for 14 days.

Booze To Cost 70% More In Delhi From Today

Delhi government decided to add a 70% corona tax on liquor sale. The tax will be applied to the MRP (maximum retail price) of each bottle. The decision was taken on Monday and it will be implemented from Tuesday. The government wants to increase its revenue with liquor sale.

The Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal chaired a cabinet meeting on Monday morning to discuss ways to harvest liquor sale to boost revenue of the state that is down by more than 100% in comparison to last year. Delhi’s revenue in April 2019 was Rs. 3,500 crore but it plunged to Rs. 300 crore in April 2020.

The CM discussed the corona tax model with his cabinet colleagues and ordered charging 70% for per bottle from the buyers. After the renewed price, a bottle that costs Rs. 1,000 on MRP will now cost Rs. 1,700 due to the tax. The additional tax will help boost the revenue in the coming days.

Liquor sale in Delhi

Delhi government has authorized agencies to sell liquor in the capital. These agencies are DTTDC, DSIDC, DSCSC and DCCWS. And they are allowed to issue licenses to private firms to sell liquor from the government authorized premises.

On Monday, the standalone liquor shops located outside the marketplaces opened their shutters to sell booze. And people came out in thousands to buy liquor. But the worst thing is that they didn’t follow social distancing guidelines while buying liquor.

The new 2020 Skoda Karoq SUV will compete with Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and the recently launched Volkswagen T-Roc. The Skoda Karoq 2020 has all leather upholstery, ambient lighting and 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with SmartLink connectivity.

India Loses To Australia In Latest ICC Test Rankings

The latest ICC Test rankings have many surprises for cricket lovers. Released on Friday, the list has India dropped to third position due to some technical changes. The stupendous 2016-17 record of India was eliminated from the annual updates.

• South Africa rankings crashed after the latest update. Their ranking has fell to eight points and it stands at sixth position after Sri Lanka.

• In T20I rankings, Pakistan that remained in top position for 27 months is now at fourth position with 260 points.
